Leading up to their Round 20 fixture against the Sydney Roosters, Manly announced that the team would be wearing a special jersey to commemorate pride and inclusiveness. Following the announcement, 7 players in the club declared that they would not be available due to their personal beliefs conflicting with the special jersey's message.
On the Tuesday before the game, the club addressed the controversy via a press conference fronted by the captain and coach (Manly CEO Scott Penn was in New York at the time). They offered an apology for failing to consult key stakeholders, especially the playing group, prior to the decision to design, manufacture and wear the jersey. They also apologised for choosing the Women in League round to wear the jersey.
After acknowledging the mismanagement, it was made clear by the club's management that the jersey would still be worn, and the players in question were within their rights to refuse to play in it.
