Biography

Junior Kiwi rep first signed a contract to play with Norths on the tour of Australia in 1981 but returned to NZ to pursue a career as a policeman. Stewart crossed the Tasman with the senior NZ team in 1986 and played in three tests against Australia and Papua New Guinea but produced a great performance in the Kiwis shock 13-6 win at Lang Park in 1987. He then signed with newly promoted club Newcastle in 1988 and was chosen for the Rest of the World in the match against Australia during the Bicentenary celebrations. A veteran of 16 Tests from 1985 to 1989, as well as being a reserve in the Kiwi team beaten by Australia in the final of the 1988 World Cup, Stewart spent time as Newcastle captain but was relegated to the interchange bench during the club's semi-final year in 1992.
