Michael Beattie

St George junior started his grade career as a five-eighth for Wollongong Wests before returning to the Dragons. Beattie formed a fine centre partnership with Brian Johnston during the 1980s. A tall, robust centre, he was a member of the Roy Masters' side that lost to C’bury in the 1985 grand final. Beattie was an immaculate timer of the ball when kicking downfield and proved to be a fine leader. In 1987-88 he played with Castleford. Despite being named 'Dally M' Captain of the Year in 1992, defensive lapses brought the long-serving ‘Saint’ into conflict with coach Brian Smith and he reluctantly retired after the grand final loss to Brisbane. Beattie initially pegged out a career in the media with Radio 2UE and after that relationship soured, he was an assistant coach to Wayne Pearce at Balmain for a short time.
