Biography

Powerhouse winger very much in the mould of his father as a player, was chosen for NSW in 2000 but withdrew because of injury before he could make his debut. Grothe was troubled by constant knee injuries in 2000 and seemed to lose his zest for playing. He parted company with the Eels, sitting out the entire 2001 season, before joining the Sydney Roosters for 2002. In 2005 Grothe finally lived up to his potential when he was called into Australia’s Tri-Nations squad but his only appearance for Australia was in the 44-12 win against France in November. The following year he was one of NSW’s best players in the Blues’ series loss to Queensland.
