Biography

Outstanding five-eighth and centre had a grounding in RU before joining brothers Rex and Roy at the Annandale club. Norman, whose 84 career pts (12t, 24g) remains a modest club record with the now defunct inner city club first represented NSW on the history-making tour of NZ in 1912. Moving to Souths he made his Test debut as a five-eighth in the First Test against England in 1914. He was Australia's only try-scorer in the 23-5 loss but was dropped for the remainder of the series and had to wait another five years, until after the end of World War I, to represent Australia again. After moving to Easts, Norman toured NZ with the Australian team in 1919 and made his final Test appearance in the Fourth Test at Auckland. Ray Norman coached Easts to win the premiership in 1923 and later coached Manly (1954) and NSW Country. He spent a lot of his adult life coaching school children on the skills of the game, even writing a text book on rugby league that was adopted by the NSW Education Department. Norman passed away in 1971, age 82.

Ray was my next door neighbour when I was growing up in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Whilst he suffered from a lack of mobility in later life and always had a walking stick, rugby league was always close to his heart & constantly taught ball, taclong & other skills to those interested. He also ran weekly training sessions in his back yard which attracted uo to 20 neighbourhood kids. He had a tackle machine built into his property so he could conduct drills properly. His classes featured in Rugby League Week - the magazine of what is now the NRL. Ray & his wife were incredibly generous & much loved in the local community.

Ray was my great uncle and he and my Grandfather Alf Butler married the Hayes sisters from Balmain (Lena and Eileen.
I lived up the road from Uncle Ray at Wentworth Road Vaucluse and witnessed him running classes for Kids on his grass court down the road with 20+ children running through rugby fundamentals.
He was the first premiership winning coach of Easts in 1923 and he and 2 brothers played for Easts.
I can confirm that Great Uncle Ray and Auntie Lena sadly had no kids and left all of their estate to Police clubs and disadvantaged children generally .
