Biography
The son of Frank Halliwell, the former 1960s Wigan centre, Steve Halliwell immigrated to Australia as an infant. A former vice-captain of the Australian Schoolboys RU tours of NZ and Ireland (1980), Halliwell signed with St George in 1981. Shifting to P’matta during the club’s premiership-winning seasons in 1982-83, he later returned to England where he played for Leigh (1985-86) and scored a club-record 49 tries for the season. After playing for St Helens in 1986-87, the centre returned to Australia to play for the G’Coast in the club’s debut season.
