Biography

Brisbane Easts forward, originally from Ipswich, first represented Queensland in 1976. A rock-solid prop, Morris was a member of the Australian side that won the World Cup in 1977 and made his Test debut against NZ the following year after coming off the reserve bench. Touring with the 1978 Kangaroos, he played in the Third and deciding Test against Great Britain as well as the First Test against France. Signing with Balmain in 1979, he played for NSW against Queensland (with brother Des Morris in the opposing pack) and was a member of the Australian team that defeated the Lions three Tests to nil. A member of Queensland's first State of Origin team, he continued his Test career on the 1980 tour of NZ and in two Tests against France the following year. Morris returned to Brisbane in 1982, captaining Wynnum-Manly to its first ever premiership, and made his second Kangaroo tour at the end of the year at the veteran age of 32. He made the last of his 15 Test appearances against France on the unbeaten tour.

Rod was a powerful tighthead front rower and he was a hard running forward and a wonderful defender on the blind side and he was a great player to have in your side and I was proud to have coached him. Len Conroy
