Biography

Newcastle junior (originally from Scone) was the hero of the Knights’ grand final win against Manly in 1997. In the dying minutes of the grand final, the dashing winger took an inside pass from Andrew Johns and scored under the posts to give Newcastle a 22-16 victory. However, it should be remembered that Albert’s defence had just as much to do with the Knights’ grand final win that year – his desperate, try-saving tackle on Norths fullback Matt Seers in the final the week before secured the club’s maiden grand final appearance. Injury limited his opportunities to build on that one, shining moment in his career and his sole rep match was a State of Origin appearance in 1999. In February 2000, he scored a club record 4 tries in a club match, against W’Tigers. Salary cap restrictions the following year saw Albert reluctantly leave the club and sign with St Helens. Tragically, a broken ankle during the club’s win in the preliminary final against Cronulla cost Albert a place in Newcastle’s grand final-winning team in 2001. In England he was a member of the St Helen’s team that won the Challenge Cup final in 2004.

This man never got the credit he truly deserves! Most people will ever remember was the winning try he scored in the 97 final but not many people remembers much of the try saving tackle he made in the previous semi final game against north syd. He pulled off arguably the greatest I mean the best try saving tackle of the century! Matt seers looks odds on scoring the try in the corner after making a break on newcastles left side defence n Albert started chasing at half way mark running diagonally to the farside of the field and cuts him centermeters short of the line eventually put him into the touch! Many people will wanna argue sattlers tackle on Byrne in 03 gf is better .. Let's face it... Byrne was never known as a quick winger... Sattler had him in sight the whole time he was chasing him. Alberts tackle on seers was out of no where no one gave him a chance to make a tackle like that.. given the circumstances, if seers has scored that try.. The score wud of leveled and Newcastle might not even play the gf.. Therefore we might never witness such a dramatic gf moment like the one in 97!
