Biography

Prolific try-scoring winger came to I’warra from Emerald in Central Queensland in 1983. A serious knee injury kept McIndoe off the field in 1984 but he recovered to represent Queensland and Australia during the late 1980s. In 1988 he was selected to play for Australia against the ‘Rest of the World’, thus becoming the Steelers’ first Australian representative player. However, despite two good seasons with Penrith (scoring a try in the club's grand final loss to Canberra in 1990), Test honours eluded him. Returning to I’warra as the club's sole draft choice in 1991 McIndoe was the season's leading try-scorer (19t) and crossed for a club record 5 tries in the match against the G’Coast. His career with the Steelers came to an end when he showed poor judgement and acted as an agent and approached a rival club on behalf of team-mate Dale Fritz. Sacked as club captain McIndoe was released at the end of the 1993 season and went on to captain-coach Tumut in the Group 9 competition. The classy winger holds the distinction of being named in the best ever I’warra (1982-98) and Penrith (1967-2006) merit teams.
