Biography

Professional runner, the son of a hurdles jockey of the same name, was graded by Newtown in 1947. Jack Troy missed out on selection in Australia's athletics team for the London Olympics in 1948 but achieved rep honours in rugby league. He played for NSW in five matches in 1950 (against Queensland and Great Britain) and scored a club record six tries in a match against Easts that year. Troy's two Test appearances came at a pivotal time in the history of the game. The Newtown winger played in the First and Third Tests against Great Britain - the latter match resulting in the 5-2 win that gave Australia the Ashes for the first time in 30 years. After leg injuries forced his retirement in 1953, he entered the administration field and was named Chairman of Selectors at St George in 1976.
