Biography

St George junior was graded after playing in the club’s Presidents Cup winning team in 1940. McRitchie served in Bougainville and New Guinea during the war but played with the club intermittently during the war years. Captain-coach of the club in 1947, the fine centre represented NSW in 1948 before being named on the 1948-49 Kangaroo Tour. McRitchie played in two Tests against Great Britain and a further two in France. After partnering fellow Test player Matt McCoy in St George's grand final win over Souths in 1949 McRitchie made his final Test appearance in the historic Third Test against Great Britain in 1950. It was McRitchie who made the initial break that resulted in St George team-mate Ron Roberts' winning try that clinched the Ashes for Australia for the first time in 30 years. The following year he joined Queanbeyan as captain-coach on the biggest contract offered to a Sydney-based player.

I was a member of the Queanbeyan Blues team of 1964 which Doug coached and his BOOMING voice could be heard all over Queanbeyan. Well I remember him pulling the front fender off a Holden car with his bare hands at his smash repair workshop. A top guy and "The Men of League" is a true testament to a great bloke. Very much appreciated his guidance, wit and energy.
