Biography
Younger brother of 1937-38 Kangaroo tourist Jim Gibbs first played for NSW in 1946 after playing in the Newcastle representative team’s 18-13 win over Gus Risman’s England team. Playing for South Newcastle, Gibbs was one of the most consistent forwards in representative football during the next two years and played for Combined Country against NZ in 1948. The 27-year-old forward was selected on the 1948-49 Kangaroo Tour – the first such tour after the end of the Second World War – and appeared in all five Tests on tour against Great Britain and France and 14 other matches. Gibbs later spent two seasons with Newtown (1949-50) but his career ended in Balmain’s lower grades the following year because of chronic knee injury.
