Biography

Balmain junior, also a NSW amateur wrestling champion, was graded with the Tigers in 1941. After serving with the RAAF in World War II (where he represented Services teams in RU) Fred de Belin helped the Tigers to win the premiership in 1946 but a broken leg curtailed his season the following year. A quick second row forward always looking for work he represented NSW in 1948 before making his Test debut against NZ. His spirited performance in the Second Test in Brisbane set up an Australian victory after the shock loss in the First Test. On the 1948-49 Kangaroo Tour de Belin played in the Third Test against Great Britain and two Tests against France. He appeared in two more Test series, against NZ in 1949 and Great Britain the following year, but after captaining Balmain in 1950 he quit Sydney to play for Junee. De Belin was later a graded referee in Cootamundra in the late 1950s.
