Biography

Premier goal-kicker immediately after the First World War (the grandfather of Souths’ Test forward Gary Stevens) kicked a then record 23 successive goals in club matches with Souths in 1920. A member of the champion Souths team that won the premiership in 1918, Arthur Oxford represented NSW in 1919 before touring NZ with the Australian team. Oxford played in three Tests on tour but later moved to Easts during the 1920s. Oxford’s three goals helped defeat his former club in Easts’ 15-12 win in the 1923 final. Oxford played in two more Tests against England in 1924 but took on a captain-coach role with Rockhampton the following year - a move that saw him gain selection in Queensland’s state team. Later a State and Australian selector, he was the father of the Easts’ clubman of the same name and the cousin of celebrated referee Aub Oxford.
