Biography
The 'founding father' of the Newtown club was actually born in Goulburn, NSW. Bill Noble was a pacy front row forward with Marrickville and Newtown RU clubs who became the Newtown rugby league first captain in 1908. Noble toured with the pioneer 1908-09 Kangaroos (author Ian Heads states that Noble was the tour secretary-treasurer and kept a tight reign on finances) but played in just three matches before being injured. In 1909 he was selected in the three-Test series against NZ and the following year, played for NSW and Australia against England. Newtown won the premiership under his captaincy in 1910 (although he missed the final through injury) and he made a second Kangaroo Tour the following year. Noble fared better on his second tour of England, playing in two Tests as well as in 19 other matches. He played the final season of his career with Balmain in 1913.
