I remember Mike from school - It's funny because we never did much rugby at school but he went on to be a brilliant player and to represent his country, what a brilliant achievement? We did play together at school I recall in rugby 7's but very rarely. Mike was also an excellent goalkeeper at football being the school team goalkeeper over the years and he could spring about like a cat. He was very courageous and where he lacked in height he made up for with his agility. We were good friends at school and I am pleased he moved on to greater things. I remember his family well, 2 other brothers and 2 sisters. His father was a real fitness enthusiast and he would get quite a number of us together including all of his sons on a playing field. to play volleyball.

Michael was not only a brilliant half-back at Union and League, but his determination to continue playing after a career-threatening injusry made him a pioneer and an ionspiration to many young players in the late 80's. he underwent the first ligament transplant when his was shattered - the Japanese pioneer of the technique came to England and performed the op in Harrogate. Mike later went on TV with Dr Graham Garden (aka 'The Goodies') on a special medical show to inform those unaware of the process that - after the op - he came back and played professional rugby again. The operation on his knee led to similar surgery on other parts of the body - particularly the shoulder area and many famous players - both round and oval ball Internationals have benefitted from his experience. Not the first in the UK (that was Stephen Tinker, a young Trinity player who was operated on by John Anderson at Middlesborough General, but both should be commended for their courage and will to show that whilst we have men like John and Dr Keio around, there is always hope for young guys like Steve and Mike.
