    Very underrated player, Newton had a very high work rate in defence and was very effective on attack with a deceptive turn of pace that many backs would be proud of. Limited first team opportunities at Widnes led to a move to Oldham were Newton came into his own and almost gained county honours for Lancashire but for injury. A excellent clubman and respected professional.

    An inspirational figure even away from rugby, but a true legacy of the game, and indeed Widnes.
    Let’s hope Rugby League clubs keep in contact with local players deep into their retirement from the game.
