With the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic looming large, the QRL announced on the 13th of March that the opening round of matches would go ahead as planned, while following all known guidelines and safeguards to combat the spread of the virus.

Just two weeks later however, it was announced that the inaugural season had been cancelled.

Holcim Cup

With an end-of-year State of Origin series confirmed, the Queenslanders needed to make sure their players were match fit. A shortened South-East Queensland competition (sponsored by concreting company Holcim) was arranged, and it involved 5 of the 8 teams from the newly formed premiership. These were also teams previously in the top division of the SEQW competition - Burleigh, Easts, Souths Logan, Tweed and Wests.

Starting in August, it too was disrupted by a hard border shutdown, briefly affecting Tweed's participation. Burleigh won the decider over Souths Logan by 28 points to 10 on the 5th of September at UAA Park.
