Your Say
phil grohala says: just some further info; Phil Regan was actually selected to play in the Australian Team only to have the selection withdrawn on the basis of a rule at the time... Phil Regan had a criminal record - being Truancy (absent from school when he was 11yo) He went on to play in the NSWCRL for Cootamundra 1922-1927 and won the Mayers Cup as a player and a coach... Phil Regan was the first paid rugby league Coach in NSWRL history (14/06/2016)
Anonymous says: Just an extra note: while it is very hard to determine (quite deliberate in fact) Phil Regan is believed to have been the first paid coach in the history of the game.
After his return from WWI he was enticed back onto the playing field for Glebe, despite still recovering from horrid battle wounds. He was a player & coach and as such received two payments hidden under differing names from 1917-1921 before being employed as a "kept" player/coach of Cootamundra (Div 9) through till 1927 (16/06/2016)
