Biography

Leading point-scorer (12t, 7g) on the Australian Schoolboy tour of England in 1979 was also rated best forward after playing hooker, lock and prop. A NSW Schoolboy rep in hockey and cricket, Cochrane played centre for Taree United. Signed by Manly, he proved to be a fine goal-kicker and a fast and creative hooker in open play. 1986's Rothmans Medal winner and 'Dally M' Hooker of the Year in 1986-87, Cochrane was unlucky not to tour with the 1986 Kangaroos. He played a fine role in Manly's grand final win in 1987 but he was plagued by injuries during the final years of his career. In 1991, Cochrane left Sydney to become captain-coach of Young. At the end of the decade, he was appointed to the NRL Judiciary.

Not captain coach at Young. Wayne Portlock was the c/c.

Mal, was an outstanding player who loved to run from dummy half a team player, who unlucky not to have played State of Origin and Australia. Great Goal kicker and highly skilled player.

Mal was part of a long line of Northern Beaches Police to have played for Manly. Great player. Could even kick the odd goal.
