Biography

Wests halfback, the son of club pioneer Ted Mead, formed an effective partnership with Vic Hey at the scrumbase during the early 1930s. Mead spent a season as captain-coach of Wauchope on the NSW North Coast in 1931 but returned to Wests the following year. He was the season’s leading point-scorer in 1932 with 104pts (10t, 37g). Mead’s selection for NSW in 1933 proved the catalyst for his inclusion on the Kangaroo Tour at year’s end. Mead made his sole Test appearance against England in the Third Test on that tour, the 19-16 loss at Swinton, but played in 15 matches in England. Mead returned to Australia and played his role in Wests’ 15-12 win over Easts in the 1934 premiership final. The following year he was named captain of his club and as well as making his last appearance for NSW scored an individual club points record (27pts - 1t, 12g) in a premiership match against C’bury that still stands. Mead returned to Wauchope in 1938-40 but ended his career as captain-coach of Wests in 1941.
