Your Say

John McClean says: Hi
Just to clarify the issue, my grand uncle John (Jack) McClean played for North's as left winger in 1951-52, his name was almost always incorrectly stated as J. McLean in programmes & newspapers, hence the J. McLean that is listed as playing for North's in 1951. From the Sydney Morning Herald 14/8/51 p10 " North Sydney club secretary, Mr Bill Lavoren, said he had given up trying to get McClean's name corrected from the spelling "McLean" which had persisted in programmes since he came into football in the southern districts."
Jack was a professional sprinter. He trialled for Newtown in 1949, having scored 35 tries for Bowral the previous season. He had also won the Queanbeyan Gift in 1948. He scored 2 tries for Southern Division against the touring Gt Britain side in 1950. He joined North's at age 22 in 1951. That year he was selected for NSW to play Puig Aubert's touring French team. He also gained selection in the Australian X111 that played France in Melbourne. In March 1952 he won the 75yd "Commonwealth Sprint" in Canberra. I am not sure why he left North's after the 1952 season, but he coached the Wamoon Hawks in the Riverina in 1953, then coached in Coonamble. I hope this info may be of some use.
Kind regards John (14/02/2012)
