Biography

Originally from Barmedman near Queanbeyan, Joe Walsh followed team-mate Allan Fitzgibbon to Balmain in 1969 as a 21-year-old. After serving two years of National Service, Walsh was spotted playing football with Queanbeyan Kangaroos by Balmain coach Leo Nosworthy. Lock forward in the Balmain team of 'no-names' that defeated the champion Souths club 11-2 in the grand final Walsh returned to the country to play with Temora (1974), Quandialla (1975-76) and then as captain-coach and of the Cowra Magpies (1977-78). A hardened prop by the end of his career Walsh’s hooker at Cowra in 1977 was a seventeen-year-old from Gooloogong named Royce Simmons. Cowra won the Group 10 competition in Walsh’s second year as coach (1978).

He was recommended to Balmain by Jack Cross whose son Paul was playing for Queanbeyan kangaroos along side Joe for season 1968 . Great defensive player that had good hands and a big heart and could read a game .
