Jim Abercrombie

North Sydney RU forward (formerly with Glebe) played for NSW in 1907 against the visiting NZ ‘All Golds’ in the third match of the series. Abercrombie, a stoutly framed goal-kicking hooker/prop, attended the foundation meeting of the North Sydney RL Club in January 1908 but by the time the first professional rugby competition got underway he had transferred his services to Western Suburbs. A late call-up to the 1908-09 Kangaroos, after originally being left out of the squad, he became Wests’ first Test player when selected in the inaugural Test match between Australia and England at London’s St James Park. Abercrombie appeared in 31 of 45 games on that first tour, including two Tests. Born James Maskell in South Australia, he changed his name to Abercrombie when his mother remarried but reverted to his birth-name after his playing career had finished. A blacksmith by trade, he emigrated to NZ in search of work during the Depression and became a share farmer.
