Biography

Harry McKinnon devoted a lifetime to the Norths club, commencing as a player in the mid-1930s until his retirement as club president in 1979. McKinnon was a tall, rangy prop who played for a decade with Norths, including the 1943 grand final loss to Newtown in front of 60,00 fans. After coaching Norths in 1949, his time as an administrator saw the club unable to improve on their premiership tally despite strong showings in the 1950s and 1960s. McKinnon nurtured the career of Ken Irvine but then had to make the difficult decision to back controversial coach Roy Francis, which resulted in the champion winger joining Manly. He retired in the 1980s, keeping close ties with the club he loved, before passing away in 1989.

Harry McKinnon was my father. He was a quiet and unassuming man despite his many years of service to Norths and to sport generally. A really good bloke with a great sense of humour and of high intellect. He was one of those blokes that spoke softly but when he did say something all present strained to not miss a word. Greatly missed even after these 27 years. My mother kissed his framed photo in the lounge room every night till she died 16 years later. Sad they have to go but go they do. Good on you mate.
