Originally from Yass, Billy Rayner was signed by P’matta Secretary Jack Scullin after representing Monaro against France in 1955. The durable hooker had a long career with the Eels and after playing for NSW in 1960, played in two Tests against France. Rayner was selected in the Australian World Cup team that year but did not play in a competition match (he did however, play for 'Rest of the World' against Great Britain). A member of the P’matta team that defeated South Africa in 1963, he became a director of the P’matta Club after his retirement. Rayner passed away after a short illness in 2006.

Your Say

John says: Billy Rayner was nearly as wide as he was tall. Norm Provan riled the Parramatta crowd in a game at Cumberland Oval where he smacked Billy across the head for no apparent reason. Billy was a known prankster nicknamed "Funny." When the Eels were on an end of season trip in the early 1980s he caused confusion during Bingo games by constantly yelling "Bingo!" while not in the game. (22/03/2020)
