Biography

Kiwi international played in the shock 24-3 win over Australia at Carlaw Park in 1971. A strongly-built centre Lowther joined C’bury the following year but seemed to lack enthusiasm after being plagued with a series of injuries. After missing out on a place in C’bury’s 1974 grand final campaign Lowther signed with Souths. He later played for Brisbane Easts and coached Ipswich Brothers in 1981.

I am 80yrs of age and been a player and league tragic since I was 15.i recall Bernie as a player befor he played for the Kiwis.i remember as a solid and exciting centre. He impressed me to the extent that I have considered him one of our best Kiwis in the position. I was also very disappointed at the time when he crossed the ditch o early in his international carrier. Cheers Bernie.

Bernie Was my first favorite player. I watched him score a try when I was a kid at Belmore against St George in 1973. I have loved all things Canterbury Bankstown ever since.

Brisbane Easts was one of my favourite teams in the years before the Broncos creation spelled a downgrade to the Brisbane rugby league competition. Bernie was a very good backline player for Easts. It’s a long time ago but as I recall he was sent off for dropping the knees into a player on the ground. It was a tougher game in those days but I remember being a bit disappointed that such a good player had left that memory.

I seem to remember Bernie scoring i think it was 4 tries in one game for Canterbury. I have never found any footage of that but I remember him being very fast, perhaps only behind Stephen Knight for pace who played for Wests at the same time.

Bernie was an exciting centre for berries..his flashing thrusts through backline defences had crowd on their feet as he burst into open space and with swerve and step would leave fullbacks grasping air. It was always a disappointment to hear the ground announcer say before the game Bernie or les johns were out with injury for the game

I played with Bernie as toddlers(6 or 7yrs) for Richmond. In my 1st game I scored a try at the wrong end. Bernie was the star player and scored plenty at the correct end. We played a final in the halftime break on Carlaw Park once, against Ellerslie but lost 3-9. Norm Howard was our coach. Not sure how I remember all this cos I can't remember where I left my glasses and they're usually on me. Went to Bernie's place in Waterview a couple of times cos my piano teacher was just round the corner. Late 1950's...
