Biography
Newcastle lock's Sydney career with Newtown ended abruptly in 1948 when he suffered knee cartilage damage in his first game with the club. Returning to Newcastle Albert Paul emerged from relative obscurity in 1952 to represent Country, NSW and Australia. Paul, who was coached by former Test forward Ray Stehr in the NSW Country team, scored a try on debut in the Test series against NZ and gained selection for the 1952-53 Kangaroo Tour. He played in 21 matches on tour including the first Test against Great Britain. The following year he took over as captain-coach of Lakes United and toured NZ with Australian squad. Paul went to Griffith in the Riverina competition in 1954 before spending a final season in Sydney with C’bury in 1956. Stints with Bathurst (1957) and Camden (1958) rounded off his playing career before he returned to Newcastle and coached Lakes United again.
