Biography

One of Australia's greatest pace bowlers and the spearhead of Don Bradman's undefeated Ashes blitz of England in 1948, Lindwall first pursued a career in league with St George in the early 1940s. A talented fullback who played in the club's grand final losses in 1942 and 1946, Lindwall kicked three goals in the 11-9 loss to C’bury in 1942 (his brother Jack was the sole try-scorer) but could not land a goal in 13-12 loss to Balmain in 1946. The following year, he quit League to concentrate on his career in cricket and under the tutelage of Bill 'Tiger' O'Reilly at the St George Cricket Club, success soon followed. Lindwall went on to capture 228 Test wickets and score 1502 runs (including 2 centuries) during his career. Following the retirement of Don Bradman in 1948-49, Lindwall also captained Australia in a Test match. Lindwall, whose cricket career ended in 1961-62, was awarded the MBE in 1965. He passed away in 1996, aged 75.

Additional Notes

Ray Lindwall started his sporting career as a fullback with St.George (his brother Jack was on the wing). After the 1946 Grand Final loss to Balmain he retired from Rugby League and took up cricket, by the end of the cricket season he was selected for his test debut. One of the greatest fast bowlers of the post war era, he went on to captain his country, scored two centuries and took over 200 test wickets.
