Biography

Newtown lock represented Sydney against England in 1936 and played in the club's 57-5 win over three-times premiers Easts in the 1937 City Cup.

Additional Notes

Ray Johnston was referred to in programs in 1934 as R Johnson this has caused confusion and is often thought to be Dick Johnson who played with Canterbury, Souths & Wests from 1938 to 1948, Dick Johnson is often referred to in programs & newspapers of the time as R Johnson which probably wrongly assumed Dick was short for Richard but his name is Allen and Dick was only a nickname. Ray was a primarily a lock forward who did start with Newtown in 1934 as a centre and moved quickly to the forwards Dick was always a fullback. Ray retired from football at a young age due to injuries and tragically died at the age of 24.
