Biography

Solid, no-nonsense prop came up through the P’matta juniors to take his place in the club's premiership-winning team in 1983. Mares, who was only 19-years-old at the time, was in the Bob O'Reilly mould - a deft ball-player and a determined runner but similarly, injury-plagued. After spending six months playing in France during the 1982-83 off-season, he looked set for a great career but a knee injury in 1987 ruled him out for 12 months. After Mares recovered, he left the club to play with Easts (much to the disgust of P’matta coach John Monie) but a recurrence of the injury ended Mares' career in 1989.

Paul Mares was probably the most talented forward ever to play for Parramatta, who didn't realise his huge potential. As a fan it remains one of the great disappointments of my life that he wasn't able (through injury) to consistently rep at the highest level - he would have made an explosive Origin player!

A genuine nice young man I met in early ‘85 off season while he was on holiday south of Nowra.
