Biography

C’bury junior played for Wests in the early 1930s, making his debut for NSW in 1933, before playing lock in Wests' 1934 final win over Easts. Punishing in defence - fast and a great cover defender - Sponberg returned to the newly promoted C’bury club in 1935 and was chosen as a reserve forward in two matches for NSW. Broken ribs suffered during the 1936 season ruled him out of all representative fixtures that year and while he did not play rep football again, Sponberg was an integral part of the C’bury team that captured the club’s first premiership in 1938.
