Biography

Queanbeyan-born hooker/ forward’s career ended at Newtown when he suffered a broken leg in 1928. However, Buckley went on to have a more important role in the administration of the game. Newtown's delegate to the NSWRL, he also served in the AIF during the war before becoming joint-manager of the 1948-49 Kangaroos. Buckley succeeded 'Jersey' Flegg as both President of the NSWRL and ARL Chairman in 1960. Under his autocratic but authoritative rule, the ensuing decade saw the development of the game domestically (new teams and rule changes) and Australia's growing dominance at international level. Buckley was awarded the OBE in 1968 before succumbing to cancer in 1973, aged 66. The Public High School Competition, the ‘Buckley Shield’, and Metropolitan Cup's top individual award, the ‘Buckley Medal’, recognise his contribution to the game.
