Playing Career

Biography

Balmain forward was at the centre of an incident with St George's George Carstairs that sparked the infamous Earl Park riot on 11 August, 1928. Russell was alleged to have kicked Carstairs after the St George player had broken Russell's nose after using his elbow in a tackle. Carstairs was knocked unconscious while Russell was attacked by an angry mob of spectators after the match. Both players were summonsed to appear in a Kogarah Court where charges of causing a public riot were later dropped. (Interestingly, the NSWRL took no action against the players, blaming the crowd for the trouble). Russell was sent off against St George the following year and left Balmain to play in Canowindra in 1930. He later won a world championship in a quieter sport, sailing 18 footers.
