Portland N.S.W of interest. Some notable Rugby League players from a small country town of Portland. Don Stait played for Western Suburbs and Newtown, winning a Grand Final against Souths in 1950. Martin Gallagher played for North Sydney, South Sydney and also Parramatta winning grand finals with Souths in 1953-54 and 55. Stait was in the Newtown side defeated by Souths in 1954 and 55. Other notable league players were John Baker who played for Western Suburbs from 1968 to 1973 and Parramatta from 1974 to 1979. Also from Portland was Craig Bellamy, current top rated Coach of Melbourne Storm and X Canberra player.
I was the Captain of the 1974 winning Amco Cup side Western Division - and also named as Player of the Series in 1974. My point being, not a bad effort for two Portland players playing in opposite sides in Sydney Rugby League Grand Finals. The others are just notables I know of, (from Portland) who have reached some heights in our wonderful game of Rugby League. I did go to South Sydney in 1964, however injuries robbed me of making the grade. Thanks. Paul Dowling.
