Biography

Wests junior played first grade with Manly RU club as a 17-year-old. While on a working holiday in England in 1970 Tim Pickup played with Blackpool Borough (after first trialing with St Helens) while still retaining his status as an amateur. A talented, robust five-eighth in his latter career, Pickup starred in the fullback position in England and was voted the club's Player of the Year. On his return to Australia in 1972 Pickup was signed by Norths and played for NSW before making his Test debut against NZ. A Kangaroo tourist in 1973 he played in four Tests (two each against Great Britain and France) and in the deciding Third Test at the SCG against Great Britain in 1974. Pickup moved to C’bury in 1975 but badly tore ligaments in his knee in a World Series match against Great Britain. His latter career was plagued by chronic knee trouble and he shifted to halfback after his comeback in 1977. He retired after one match in 1979 and was reinstated into the RU ranks in order to be eligible to play lower grade rugby. Pickup later became a director of the C’bury Leagues Club.
