Biography

Success came late in the career of former Balmain junior Kevin Smyth. After stints with P’matta and Balmain, the 29-year-old Wests forward was selected for the 1963-64 Kangaroo tour after P’matta lock Ron Lynch was injured in a selection trial. Smyth, who played in two grand final losses to St George (1962-63), starred in two Tests against France on the Ashes-winning tour. A contractual dispute with Wests ended his Sydney career in 1964 and he was later captain-coach of Southern Districts (Liverpool) in Sydney's Second Division competition and I’warra club Collegians.

Kevin Smyth came to the Illawarra District Rugby League in 1965 via Liverpool wher he had spent the 1964 season after leaving Western Suburbs Magpies in the early part of that season. In 3 years at Collegians Illawarra 1965, 1966 & 1967 he finally led the club to their club their initial first grade grand final win in 1967 as captain/coach. The teams had many outstanding players such as Australian representative second row Ron Costello. He was an excetional player and perhaps one of the finest to play in the Illawarra competition.

Kevin was an inspirational captian coach of the Illawarra Collegians Club from 1965 to 1967.

I am pleased to say that I was a selector of the club during these years and was pleased to have known and been associated with Kevin.

He bought many fine players to the club including Rodger Ludkin, Wes Hartley, Geoff Meaney, Jim Gilmour, John Kohen, Ron Costello, Ron Hopper and Malcolm Condon.

It is my opinion that he was in the best 3 lock forwards to have played in the illawarra Competition.

    Hi.

I have followed Illawarra Rugby League as a spectator
from 1955 till the late seventies when my employment
took me out of Wollongong. I have seen the greats of
Illawarra rugby league such as Graeme Langlands, Harry
Wells, Bob Fulton, Noel Mulligan and many more. Kevin
Smyth in my opinion was the best lock forward I saw during
those years. His inspirational captaincy in Collegians first
premiership win in 1967 grand final was something to behold.
In his three years as captain coach with Collegians from 1965-
67 he got the team into a final and two grand finals. He was
a team leader, a true gentleman and family man.

    Cheers
    Noel
