Biography

Brisbane-born centre first represented Queensland in 1961 when playing for Townsville. Hagan made his Test debut against Great Britain in the First Test of the 1962 Ashes series but was dropped after Australia's 31-12 thrashing. The following year he returned to the international stage after representing Queensland against NSW, NZ and South Africa and made a second Test appearance as a winger in the First Test against NZ. He missed out on selection for the 1963-64 Kangaroos and had to be content with captaining Huddersfield during the off-season. Hagan shifted to C’bury in 1967, representing NSW and playing in the club's 1967 grand final team that lost to Souths. Hagan was selected as manager-coach of C’bury in 1971, the year after he retired as a player, and was later part of the consortium that launched G’Coast into the NSW premiership in 1988. He was the inaugural president of the G’Coast ‘Giants’ before the club was taken over by Seagulls Leagues Club. Hagan replaced Peter Moore as Chief Executive of the C’bury Club in 1997 and was appointed to both the NSWRL and ARL Board of Directors in 2001. In 2002 he voluntarily resigned from all senior positions with the League and the Bulldogs when the extent of the club’s salary cap rorting was exposed.

Played for Australia two years before his brother (Michael) was born!

Immature winger when first picked for Australia against Ashton’s all star British tourists in ‘62. His stint in England matured him and he returned to Canterbury a polished and stylish center. England saw the best of him.
