Biography
Souths junior was graded in 1942 and represented City in 1944. With interstate matches postponed because of the Second World War Billy Thompson was selected for NSW against a Services team that year. In 1946 he went to Moree as captain-coach and played for Northern NSW against Great Britain in a tour match at Tamworth. Joining the Valleys club in Toowoomba in 1947 Thompson gained selection for Queensland and proved to be the No.1 halfback in the state. Selected as the third halfback on the 1948-49 Kangaroo Tour he made his Test debut in Australia’s 16-7 First Test loss to Great Britain at Swinton. Although he later toured NZ with the Australian squad in 1949 this was to be Thompson’s only Test appearance.
