Biography

Rated one of the game's greatest pivots - smart in attack and a ferocious defender - Hey was selected for NSW in his first season in grade. A late selection on the 1933-34 Kangaroo tour when Test pivot Ernie Norman failed a fitness test, Hey appeared in all three Tests against England partnering his Wests' teammate Les Mead at the scrumbase. He returned to win a premiership with Wests in 1934 but later ventured to Toowoomba in 1936. After playing for Queensland, he was selected in three Tests against England and was in the peak of his career when he signed a contract with English club Leeds. In his time in England Hey took the club to consecutive Challenge Cup wins (1941-42) before playing with Dewsbury and Hunslet. In 1948 he returned to Australia to captain-coach P’matta during the club's formative years. Coach of P’matta (1948-53), C’bury (1955-56) and Wests (1958-59), he coached Australia in 1950 when the Ashes were captured for the first time in thirty years. The following year his Australian team was beaten by the ‘Flying Frenchmen’ in a three-Test series at home. Hey was again at the helm when Australia recaptured the Ashes in1954 but ended his tenure as Australian captain with a further loss to the visiting French team the following year. Hey passed away in April 1995, aged 82.

My father saw old Vic play for Parramatta towards the end of his career. A young player punched Vic. Next time the young player got the ball Vic hit him with a tackle that nearly buried the kid. Dad said Vic was boring his shoulder into the kid an inch from the ground. Hard but fair tackler.

I met Vic , through his daughter, Vicki, well after his retirement and so much enjoyed his humour and comments on his League career. He was a most likeable man and true gentleman. A wonderful, successful career in a hard sport he played the game tough and fair.
