Biography

Canberra junior, colourfully described as a 'giant speed merchant', represented Country Firsts and NSW as an 18-year-old before gaining selection on the 1929-30 Kangaroo tour. Although a knee injury limited his appearances on tour, the talented winger scored 11 tries in 7 tour matches (no Tests). Ridley captained Queanbeyan in 1930, but the powerfully built flankman's career flourished after joining Wests in 1931. Ridley went on to play for NSW again in 1933 and made his second Kangaroo tour at year's end. He played in two Tests against England on tour and was leading try-scorer with 25 tries. On his return, he proved that his career was still at its peak when he scored four tries in an interstate match and a double in Wests' 15-12 win over Easts in the 1934 final. Ridley played in all three Tests against England in 1936. A record holder with the now defunct Magpies club - most tries in a match (6t against Newtown in 1934) and most tries in a season (18t in 1932), he returned the country at the end of his playing career. A former mayor of Orange, Ridley passed away in 1993, aged 83.
