Biography
Marist Brothers (Kogarah) junior had the honour of scoring St George's first try in a competition match in 1921. By the end of the year Carstairs had become the club's first home-grown international player. A burly centre and talented goal-kicker, he played in 17 matches on the 1921-22 Kangaroo tour, including the final two Tests against England. In 1928 'Bluey' Carstairs was at the centre of an incident that led to the infamous 'Earl Park riot' during a match against Balmain (Carstairs was kicked by opposing forward Tony Russell, sparking a fight amongst rival supporters). Stints with Barmedman (1925) and Narrabri (1926) punctuated his career with the Dragons. A 'digger' in both World Wars (he served with the AIF in France in 1918), his ‘death’ was prematurely reported during World War II when he was fighting in the Middle East in 1940. Carstairs actually died on 14 October 1966, on the same day as former Test hooker Arthur Folwell.

Actually served in both World Wars. In the First World War he was ranked as Private in the 1st Battalion. In the Second World War he was ranked as Lance Sergeant. He was prematurely reported as KIA while fighting in the Middle East. He actually died in November 1966 on the same day as former Test Hooker Arthur Folwell.
