Playing Career
Biography
Originally from Barmedman near Queanbeyan, Joe Walsh followed team-mate Allan Fitzgibbon to Balmain in 1969 as a 21-year-old. After serving two years of National Service, Walsh was spotted playing football with Queanbeyan Kangaroos by Balmain coach Leo Nosworthy. Lock forward in the Balmain team of 'no-names' that defeated the champion Souths club 11-2 in the grand final Walsh returned to the country to play with Temora (1974), Quandialla (1975-76) and then as captain-coach and of the Cowra Magpies (1977-78). A hardened prop by the end of his career Walsh’s hooker at Cowra in 1977 was a seventeen-year-old from Gooloogong named Royce Simmons. Cowra won the Group 10 competition in Walsh’s second year as coach (1978).
