Hegarty played fullback for Valleys in a year they were called Seagulls-Diehards as they beat Ipswich 17-14 to win the Brisbane Grand Final in 1988. Hegarty kicked 2 goals. They won again the year after, and were called Valleys again. Hegarty was again fullback - and captain - and kicked 4 goals as they defeated Ipswich again, this time 28-4.

Steve Hegarty was one of the first to introduce the around the corner goal kicking style to rugby league. His Son, Bryce, is as every bit as good, if not better, than Steve was.

Hegarty was an excellent player, his son Bryce, I believe will be better.
