Mick was a very talented centre at Nepean College of Advanced Education (now UWS) and captained the team to victory in the 1979 University Cup grand final. His centre partner was future Norths and Penrith winger Andrew Simons. Nepean was defeated in the 1980-81 grand finals by Mount St Marys, Strathfield, which were captain-coached by Des Hasler.
