Vandenberg won the 800 metres and 1500 metres at the League Olympics at Leichhardt Oval back in 1978. This was the only time this event was ever held.

Played school and weekend rugby withJohn, an outstanding player. John was an exceptional middle distance runner who won many CHS events. In my opinion if John had been taken on by a credentialed trainer he would have had a serious senior athletic career at the highest level. More importantly he was a modest champion and an extremely decent person.

I went to high school with John, and we were neighbours too. He was a phenomenal athlete, I can't remember him losing in 800m or 1,500m races as a junior. Saw him kick a place kick from halfway against Bathurst All Saints in 1973. As others have noted, if he'd been coached in that direction, he would have been a literal world-beater, no doubt at all. Mike Gibson wrote a column on him in the Daily Telegraph 1970 when he became the first 15 year old in the world to break 2mins for 800 yards. He was that good.
