Biography

Wauchope winger came to Souths as a 19-year-old from South Lismore in 1972 before moving to Manly. Mooney, who was a prolific try-scorer with both clubs, was the season's leading try-scorer in 1976 (16t, equal with Bob Fulton) and 1979 (19t). Excitable and easily provoked during his younger years, Mooney won premierships with the Sea Eagles in 1976 and 1978 and was Manly's sole try-scorer in the 11-all draw with Cronulla in the 1978 grand final.

Tom Mooney scored the last ever try in a first grade match at Cumberland Oval for Manly against Parramatta at Cumberland Oval in 1981 in the last ever first grade match ever played there.

He was also a great school teacher, he taught me at Lewisham Public School, I had him 2 years in a row and I loved him. He was such a great all round man, I have such great memories of him as my teacher

Recall an opposing winger when commenting on Tom's defensive positioning commented that once after a game against him when he went home and opened his front door he was half expecting Tom to be there to stop him entering.

I use to work for Tom at the Great Northern Hotel in Byron during 1997 and other years. I’m a Knights supporter since 1988 and had a shift after the epic Grand Final in 1997 where I boldy suggested to Tom that it was the best game of footy I’d ever seen….lucky to walk out alive and still have a job after that!!

Mr Mooney was my school teacher at Lewisham public school and he is the reason for me following Manly in the NRL my whole life and always get bagged because I never lived in the Manly area.
To me though....Mr Mooney was a great teacher!!

    Go Manly!!!
