Biography

Fiery Manly prop played in the club's 13-10 win over P’matta in 1976 and both the grand final draw and replay with Cronulla in 1978. Harvey drew controversy during his career, first for his high arm-action when making a shoulder charge, and then when he declined to tour with 1978 Kangaroos due to family reasons. (Harvey had been a non-playing reserve against NZ that year but would only divulge his reasons for not touring to League boss, Kevin Humphreys). After a period with Easts, he captain-coached the Seagulls club in the Group 18 competition to premiership victory in 1983 and 1987. Harvey's playing career finished after captaining Wee Waa to victory in the Group 4 premiership in 1992 (at age 37) and two years later, was thrust into the role of coach of the G’Coast club following the resignation of Wally Lewis. With limited talent at the club, Harvey did enough to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon for the fourth consecutive year but was later replaced by Phil Economidis.
