Biography

Baby-faced winger's career is illuminated by one golden moment in the 1980 grand final. Gearin scored one of the finest tries seen at the SCG when he fielded a Greg Brentnall kick on the full and scored in the dying minutes of the match. Gearin also landed six goals from six attempts to post a personal total of 15pts in Canterbury's 18-4 win over Easts. A Newtown junior (Lewisham) Gearin was graded as a halfback by Canterbury before moving to the wing. A great goal-kicker in the traditional ‘toe-poker’ style, he eclipsed George Taylforth's club record in 1979 with 242pts (12t, 103g) - the year that the Bulldogs lost to St George in the grand final. Canterbury were premiers the following year and in 1981, Gearin was again the season's leading point-scorer with 183pts (13t, 72g). He left the club in 1982 to link with St George and was top-scorer for the club in 1983-84. Gearin then returned to Canterbury but was out of favour with Warren Ryan and successfully gained a mid-season release to play with Manly. He retired soon after, disenchanted with the defence-orientated style of play at the time.

In 1980 Steve Gearin sang "Hard Rock Cafe" on track 3 of the second half of "Tooth Hotels Presents Footy Favourites", an album which rugby league players performed on and came out that year. In 1983 when playing for St George against Balmain at Leichhardt Oval, Gearin kicked a penalty goal that went straight between the posts with both touch judges raising the flags. However referee Chris Ward disallowed the goal and put down a scrum after he had noticed a St George player was in front of Gearin when he took the kick.

One of my favourite bulldogs players of the early 80s. Always tried hard and was a vary fair player. A shame he never represented NSW or Australia as he was amongst the best wingers of that era.

Steve Gearin was one of the great finishers the game has ever seen. A fair and honest player. What a goalkeeper. Buba - we loved ya!
