Made his only first grade appearance when selected as an 18 year old to play against Norths when Geoff Carr withdrew from the team originally Warren Thompson was selected to take the spot but he arrived late for Friday training and was dropped and Popplewell was selected to play. He was graded by St.George late in 1969 and played 3rd grade through into 1970 before gaining selection in reserve grade and then his lone first grade game on July 5 1970. He played through the lower grades into 1971 and then seemed to have dropped out of grade football at only 20 years old.
